Dolby Vision on HDR10-only projectors & TVs with the HDfury Vertex² (LLDV)
The most popular thing Vertex² owners do: make an Apple TV 4K, Shield, Xbox or UHD Blu-ray player output Low-Latency Dolby Vision (LLDV) — Dolby Vision that is tone-mapped by the player, scene by scene — and hand it to a projector or TV that only understands HDR10. Below: how it works, the exact Vertex² settings, source and display settings, a troubleshooting list, and a table of 50+ projectors and 50+ TVs with recommended values.

1. How LLDV on an HDR10 display works
Dolby Vision comes in two flavours. TV-led (standard) DV sends the raw picture plus dynamic metadata inside an 8-bit RGB "tunnel" and lets the TV do the tone mapping — this only works on Dolby Vision displays. Player-led / Low-Latency Dolby Vision (LLDV) lets the source do the DV composition and tone mapping and sends the result as a normal 12-bit YCbCr 4:2:2 stream with a PQ (ST.2084) transfer function — which is exactly what an HDR10 display can show.
The trick is that a source only outputs LLDV if the display's EDID says it is a Dolby Vision (LLDV) sink. The Vertex² sits between source and display and presents a custom EDID with a Dolby Vision data block that describes your display: primaries, minimum and maximum luminance (Tmin / Tmax). The player then tone-maps every scene to those limits and sends LLDV. The Vertex² adds (or keeps) an HDR10 infoframe so your projector or TV switches into its HDR mode. As one AVForums owner puts it: "The Vertex² does nothing to the signal except spoof the EDID of the sink — the source does all the work."
The result is dynamic, per-scene tone mapping on a display that natively only has a single static HDR10 curve. That matters most on projectors (100–350 real nits) and on HDR10-only TVs like every Samsung, where DV-only streaming titles would otherwise fall back to static HDR10.
2. What you need
- An HDfury Vertex² (or Diva, Maestro, VRROOM, Arcana — same method; this guide uses Vertex² menus).
- An LLDV-capable source. Official HDfury list: Apple TV 4K (all generations), Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019+ (firmware 9.1.1+, "Force LLDV" in developer options), Xbox One X/S and Series X/S, Sony UBP-X700 / X800M2 / X1100ES, Panasonic UB820 / UB9000, Oppo UDP-203 / 205, Fire TV Stick 4K / 4K Max / Cube, Chromecast with Google TV, Zidoo (VS10 engine). Only Apple TV 4K, Sony X700/X800M2, Oppo (disc), Fire TV ("Always HDR"), Roku 4K and Zidoo can also convert SDR and HDR10 content to LLDV; Shield, Panasonic and Xbox only output LLDV for native Dolby Vision content.
- A display that supports HDR10 (PQ / ST.2084), i.e. practically any 4K HDR projector or TV, including all Samsung sets.
- Good HDMI cables: 4K60 12-bit 4:2:2 LLDV is a full 18 Gbps signal — certified 18 Gbps copper up to ~3–4 m, fibre for longer runs. Most film content is 4K24, which older 10 Gbps projectors (Epson 5040UB/TW9300, Sony VW260/VW360) can also handle at 12-bit 4:2:2.
3. Vertex² setup step by step
All settings are in the Vertex² web server (type the IP address shown on the OLED into any browser — see the manual page on accessing the web server). Two routes exist: the quick route with a fixed Custom EDID, and the tunable route with Automix + a custom DV string. Start with the quick route; move to the tunable one if you want to set your own nits.
EDID tab — quick route: pick a fixed LLDV EDID
Set EDID mode = Custom and for each input you use, choose:
10 – Custom [SONY A1 LLDV BT2020]— BT.2020 primaries, full audio. Recommended for almost every projector and TV; it avoids the red push that DCI-P3 primaries cause.5 – Custom [SONY A1 LLDV V2]— DCI-P3 primaries. Use only if your display runs a calibrated DCI-P3 profile (e.g. JVC with the colour filter).9 – Custom (Panasonic OLED, full DV incl. LLDV, HDR10+)— used by some Samsung Premiere / 7.1-audio setups.- Never choose EDIDs labelled "HDR" only (11–13, 20–22) — they don't advertise Dolby Vision, so the player will not send LLDV.
Click SEND, then restart the source. With a fixed Custom EDID the values on the DV tab are not used.
EDID tab — tunable route: Automix + custom DV string
Set EDID mode = Automix. Video flags: tick the output your projector/TV is on (usually TX0). Audio flags: Stereo or Audio System depending on where your AVR is connected. Under DV flags select DV CUSTOM STRING (DV tab). Now the DV tab defines what the source sees. Tip: afterwards you can click "save active EDID as Custom EDID 10" to freeze the result and assign it per input.
HDR/DV tab — build the Dolby Vision data block
DV interface: Low Latency 12-bit YCbCr 4:2:2 (safe for every display; the "+ RGB/YCbCr 4:4:4" variant is not accepted as HDR by some TVs, e.g. Samsung 8K).Primaries: ITU-R BT.2020-2 (default). DCI-P3 only if your display is calibrated to P3 — otherwise expect a red/magenta tint. Advanced users type the measured primaries of their display.Max luminance (Tmax): start at 1000 nits. Projector owners tune it down to the real peak (JVC lamp 300–400, Epson LS12000 ≈ 332, DLP UST 500–600); very bright DLPs and Samsung Premiere use 4000–10,000. 10,000 effectively hands tone mapping back to the display.Min luminance (Tmin): 0.005 for projectors/LCD, 0.0005 for OLED; avoid 0 (black clipping/elevation).- Click CREATE, then SEND DV. The values are written into the EDID; the form itself does not remember them after reload — that is normal.
Reference strings owners use: EB:01:46:D0:00:45:1B:81:56:98:A9:53 = BT.2020, 0.005–1000 nits (Epson TW9400); EB:01:46:D0:00:45:03:80:86:60:76:8F = 900 nits, …03:40:86… = 500 nits, …03:28:86… = 350 nits.
HDR/AVI tab — inject HDR10 metadata when the input is LLDV
Tick "Use custom HDR for TX0 and TX1 when input is LLDV". This is the switch that makes your projector/TV enter HDR mode. Fill the custom HDR metadata: EOTF SMPTE ST 2084, Primaries ITU-R BT.2020-2 (same as the DV tab — mixing BT.2020 and P3 between the tabs causes red push), White point D65, Max luminance = your Tmax (1000), Min 0.005, MaxCLL = Tmax, MaxFALL = 400 (or 100 / 40 for 100-nit setups). Click CREATE IF, then SEND HDR.
Most projectors (JVC, Epson, Sony) ignore the luminance fields — only the HDR flag matters. DLPs with dynamic tone mapping (BenQ, Samsung Premiere) do react, which is why some owners set 10,000 nits here. JVC owners who switch modes via RS-232 macros leave this box unticked and use the MACROS page instead. See the manual: HDR/DV section for every field.
SCALER tab
Autoscaling, tick "do not upscale for TX0", colour and deep colour "Follow". For 10 Gbps displays (Epson 5040UB/TW9300/LS10500, Sony VW260/360/550) limit the output to 4K24 4:2:2 12-bit or 4K60 4:2:0, otherwise you get 8-bit banding. See manual: SCALER.
CONFIG tab (optional)
Enable the OSD "Rx flags" so the received format (LLDV) is shown on screen; set HDCP output to 1.4 for quicker syncs with older gear; use Export config when asking for help so others can see your exact values.
4. Source settings
- Apple TV 4K: Video & Audio → Format 4K Dolby Vision (24/30/60 Hz depending on your display's bandwidth; use 4K24 on 10 Gbps projectors). Match Content → Match Frame Rate ON. Match Dynamic Range OFF = everything (SDR and HDR10 too) is converted to LLDV; ON = SDR stays SDR, HDR10 stays HDR10, DV becomes LLDV — most projector owners prefer ON. Accept the "Dolby Vision test" pop-up after every EDID change. In Infuse keep "Match Dynamic Range" off or SDR files play in BT.709.
- Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019): Settings → Display & Sound → Advanced (developer options) → Force LLDV. Converts only native DV titles; the 2017 Shield cannot.
- Xbox One X/S, Series X/S: enable Dolby Vision for video and games. Xbox always outputs player-led DV, so it will follow your Tmax — set HGiG/Game HDR on the TV to match.
- Oppo UDP-203 / 205: HDR = Dolby Vision, DV mode = Player-led; works from discs, BDMV and ISO (not MKV, not HDMI-in). Long-press "i" to confirm DV output.
- Sony UBP-X700 / X800M2 / X1100ES: HDR output Dolby Vision (forces LLDV; can convert SDR/HDR10 but hard-clips converted HDR10 at 1000 nits). Check with the Display button.
- Panasonic UB820 / UB9000: Dolby Vision ON; native DV discs only; HDR Optimiser is bypassed while DV is on; owners prefer 8000 rather than 10,000 nits to avoid white-out.
- Zidoo Z9X etc.: HDR = "Dolby Vision Low Latency (LLDV, YUV422)", VS10 ON for SDR/HDR conversion, Custom EDID OFF, 4K24–30 YUV444 10-bit, 4K50–60 YUV420 10-bit.
- Fire TV Stick 4K / Cube: Dynamic range "Always HDR" converts everything to LLDV (Cube gen 2 struggles with 24p).
5. Projector / TV settings
- Select the display's HDR10 / ST.2084 picture mode and a BT.2020 colour profile (DCI-P3 only if that is what you put in the DV block). Set colour space to BT.2020 rather than Auto and HDMI range to Full/Expanded where the menu offers it.
- Turn the display's own dynamic tone mapping OFF (JVC Frame Adapt, Sony Dynamic HDR Enhancer, LG/Samsung "Dynamic tone mapping"/"HDR Tone Mapping: Active", Epson leave Dynamic Contrast on) — the player has already done that job. Double tone mapping flattens highlights.
- Enable full-bandwidth HDMI on the port: Samsung Input Signal Plus (2016–18: HDMI UHD Color), LG Ultra HD Deep Colour, Sony Enhanced format, Panasonic HDMI HDR Setting, Vizio Full UHD Color, Hisense HDMI 2.0 Enhanced, Philips HDMI Ultra HD → Optimal.
- Older JVC X-series without automatic HDR switching must be put into the HDR mode manually or via an RS-232 macro; many owners load a custom gamma curve (e.g. a 1000-nit or 350/125-nit curve) instead of the built-in one.
- Tone-map matching trick (Epson LS12000 owners): set Tmax to ≈ the projector's real peak (300–350), leave the projector's HDR slider low, play a clipping pattern and raise contrast until only values above Tmax clip. The projector then passes the player's curve through untouched.
6. How to verify it's working
- The Vertex² OLED / INFO page shows e.g.
RX0: 4K23.976 422 BT2020 12b DV 297MHzor "LLDV" on the input andTX0: … HDR/ "HDR12" on the output. Enable the OSD Rx flags to see this on screen. - The projector's/TV's info screen shows HDR10 (or HDR), BT.2020, 12-bit. Oppo/Sony players show "Dolby Vision" as the output format.
- Test scenes owners use: The Meg ch. 8 (clouds), Aquaman ch. 6 (window), Mad Max: Fury Road, Blade Runner 2049, Spears & Munsil "Horses in the snow". Subtitles that change brightness between scene cuts prove dynamic tone mapping is active.
7. Projector list — recommended Vertex² LLDV settings
Every projector here supports HDR10 but not Dolby Vision (unless marked DV native), so the Vertex² LLDV method applies. Values are starting points collected from HDfury pages and owner reports; always fine-tune Tmax to taste. Owner = quoted from a real user, Official = HDfury/manufacturer, Starting point = derived from the generic recipe and the projector's specs (no public owner report found yet).

8. TV list — recommended Vertex² LLDV settings
Peak-brightness figures are approximate 10 %-window values from published reviews (RTINGS, HDTVTest) — verify for your exact size. Rule of thumb used: Tmax = the panel's real peak (never 10,000 — that disables player tone mapping), Tmin 0.0005 for OLED / 0.05 for FALD LCD / 0.1 for edge-lit, BT.2020 primaries unless the panel covers less than ~85 % P3, and custom HDR MaxCLL = Tmax, MaxFALL ≈ 0.4 × Tmax so the TV's own tone mapper stays idle.

9. What Vertex² adds on TVs that already have Dolby Vision
- Force LLDV instead of TV-led DV: choose a Custom DV string / EDID that advertises only the low-latency interface (bank 8 "LG C8 LLDV" is an example). The player composes the picture and the TV stays in its fastest HDR path — useful for Xbox Series X Dolby Vision gaming where the TV's DV game mode adds lag. To keep TV-led DV, use Automix with the custom DV string unticked.
- Force HDR10 instead of DV / strip DV: remove the DV block from the EDID and the source falls back to HDR10 — handy when a TV's DV mode is dimmer, laggier or buggy for a particular app.
- Custom Tmax/Tmin: ask the player for a 1000-nit target on an 800-nit OLED for brighter mid-tones, or lower it to protect highlights; set Tmin 0.0005 for OLED.
- HDR10 boost and HLG → HDR: raise or lower MaxCLL/MaxFALL in real time, or translate HLG broadcasts to HDR10 for displays without HLG.
- "RGB 8-bit" during DV is normal: TV-led DV modes 0 and 1 travel inside an 8-bit RGB container; the Vertex² reporting 8-bit is not a downgrade. LLDV is real 12-bit 4:2:2 and is processed at 12-bit, never clipped.
- Bandwidth note: the Vertex² is an 18 Gbps device — 4K60 DV/LLDV is fine, 4K120 DV gaming needs the 40 Gbps HDfury VRROOM.
10. Samsung-specific notes
No Samsung TV supports Dolby Vision — they use HDR10+ instead — which makes Samsung owners the biggest group using LLDV for DV-only titles (iTunes/Apple TV+ DV, Netflix DV profile 5, Disney+, Xbox DV games). Reports from S95C (Arcana + Shield, "1300 nits peak instead of 1000"), The Premiere LSP9T (Vertex²) and Q900R owners confirm the TV accepts the 12-bit 4:2:2 LLDV stream as HDR10.
- Input Signal Plus must be ON for the HDMI port (2016–18 sets: "HDMI UHD Color"), otherwise the port is limited to 8-bit and the HDR flag is rejected.
- Keep the DV interface at 12-bit YCbCr 4:2:2: 8K Q900R owners found the TV refuses to enter HDR with 12-bit 4:4:4.
- Picture: Filmmaker or Movie, HDR Tone Mapping = Static on 2023+ sets ("Active" flares highlights), Contrast Enhancer OFF, on 2016–19 sets switch HDR+ (the SDR→HDR upconverter) OFF. Gaming: Game Mode + Game HDR/HGiG set to your Tmax.
- HDR10+ content (Fire TV, Samsung apps, Apple TV 4K 2022 for some titles) already gets dynamic metadata natively — keep "Use custom HDR when input is LLDV" (LLDV-only trigger) rather than an always-on custom HDR, so HDR10+ passes untouched. Xbox has no HDR10+ at all, so LLDV via Vertex² is the only dynamic path for Xbox on Samsung.
11. Troubleshooting & gotchas
- Nothing changed after editing: you must restart the source after every EDID/DV change (Apple TV: accept the DV test). The DV tab form resets on reload — the values are stored in the EDID.
- Red / magenta tint, red skin tones (typical with Apple TV or Sony X800M2): DCI-P3 primaries in the EDID. Use EDID 10 or BT.2020 in both the DV and HDR tabs, or match the display's calibrated P3 profile; BenQ: HDR Brightness −2; Sony: lower red bias.
- Pink screen / stayed SDR: the display received TV-led DV (RGB tunnelling) or no HDR flag. Make sure the EDID advertises LLDV (Sony A1-type, not an LG DV EDID) and "Use custom HDR when input is LLDV" is ticked.
- Washed-out, dull or clipped highlights: Tmax too high (10,000 hands tone mapping to the display) or too low (100 nits on a projector caused "improper tone mapping"); Panasonic players white out at 10,000 — use 8000; Sony X800M2 clips converted HDR10 at 1000.
- Crushed or raised blacks: Tmin 0 — use 0.001–0.005 (0.0005 on OLED).
- SDR looks oversaturated: everything is being converted to LLDV while the display's HDR mode is set to Auto — use Apple TV "Match Dynamic Range ON" or the Vertex² LLDV-only trigger.
- AVR in the chain kills LLDV: some receivers/soundbars (e.g. Sony HT-NT5) strip or rewrite the DV block. Connect sources to the Vertex² inputs, the display to TX0 and the AVR to the dedicated audio output.
- Banding / dropouts: 4K60 12-bit 4:2:2 is a full 18 Gbps signal — use certified or fibre cables; 10 Gbps projectors need 4K24 or 4:2:0. Active/fibre cables draw HDMI 5 V — use the supplied PSU.
- Apple TV outputs full DV instead of LLDV when a Dolby Vision TV is connected on TX1 at the same time as the projector on TX0 — unplug the TV or use a fixed Custom EDID.
- Long sync times / black screens on frame-rate changes (JVC up to 30–70 s, Disney+ IMAX aspect switches on NZ7): set Apple TV to a fixed frame rate or HDCP 1.4 output.
- Consoles with HDR10-only games cannot get dynamic tone mapping from metadata injection — LLDV needs a source that renders DV.
- Compatibility issues after a firmware update: re-check that the DV flag and "custom HDR when LLDV" are still enabled — updates and resets can revert them.
12. FAQ
Does this give my projector "real" Dolby Vision?
It gives you Dolby Vision's dynamic, per-scene tone mapping, performed by the player against the limits you set for your display. The display itself still runs in HDR10 mode. For projectors and HDR10-only TVs that is the only way to get DV content's dynamic metadata used at all.
Which Vertex² EDID should I start with?
Custom EDID 10 (Sony A1 LLDV BT2020). Switch to Automix + custom DV string when you want your own Tmax/Tmin.
Which Tmax value?
1000 nits is the universal starting point. Projector owners then reduce it toward the real peak (300–600); bright DLPs and Samsung Premiere go higher. Never 10,000 unless you deliberately want the display to do the tone mapping.
Can a cheap EDID-spoofing splitter do the same?
A €25 EDID-flashable splitter can trigger LLDV, but it cannot rewrite the HDR infoframe, set Tmax per input, switch EDIDs per source or drive RS-232 macros — which is exactly what makes the result usable on a projector.
Does it work with HDR10+?
HDR10+ passes through untouched as long as you use the LLDV-only trigger. Samsung owners typically run LLDV for DV-only titles and native HDR10+ for everything else.
Does the Vertex² add lag?
Under 1 ms. LLDV itself is Dolby's low-latency profile, designed for gaming.
